- St. John, N.B. old Coat of Arms at court house. This Coat of Arms was carved by one of the old ship's figurehead carvers of whom there were several in Saint John a century ago, in fact, right up to the time when the sailing ship was replace by steam. Some famous sailing vessels came out of the shipyards of Saint John among which was the "Marco Polo".The Coat of Arms was carved from one piece of wood and is approximately six feet in width and about seven feet in height. This will give an idea of the size of the trees which were prevalent in New Brunswick's forests at that time. The British Admiralty obtained many of their masts and spars for naval ships from the forests of New Brunswick and trees thus picked out were marked with a board arrow. The Coat of Arms is considered to be over a hundred years old.Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in the British Empire outside of the British Isles.
