Canada
In Canada during the Great Depression, particularly in the Maritimes, changes in fishing techniques and financial constraints led fishermen to rely on salvaging four-stroke engines from automobiles as a cost-effective alternative for their small boats. LeJay’s business model was to print and sell cheap handbooks that focused on Do It Yourself (DIY) projects, most of which were about the electrification of common objects, in particular during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In their handbooks or manuals, they often included DIY’s of electric outboard motors made from old Ford “T” generators. Though it appears they also sold their own trolling motors, most notably the LeJay Elec-Troll Electric Trolling Motor. The presence of trolling-motors in Canada showcases that there was a market for these motors.
Function
This artifact is used to power a small marine craft while trolling.
Technical
A trolling motor is a compact electric motor typically placed on the front or back of a fishing boat to propel it silently through the water, minimizing disturbance to the fish. The LeJay Elec-Troll operated on a 12-volt battery for maximum performance, or 6 volts for lower-speeds. It has 1 horsepower. The Elec-Troll weighed 19 ½ lbs and could run 8-10 hours or more on a large 6-volt battery (which is equivalent to 2- or 3-days’ use) with a trolling speed of 6 miles per hour depending on voltage of battery and a trolling speed drain of 5 to 8 amperes. The motor is equipped with grease-sealed and Oilite bearings throughout, with a semi-floating drive-shaft and spline coupled to a flexible propeller shaft, and a weedless rudder cast in one piece directly on shaft housing. The Elec-Troll could be easily attached to any boat or canoe.
