MAGNETIC SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED BY MEMBERS OF THE TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY OF CANADA AS EARLY AS 1880. EQUIPPED WITH MAGNETIC INSTRUMENTS THE TS SURVEYORS WERE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE BEARINGS OF LINES ALREADY DETERMINED FOR LAND SURVEYS, WITHOUT INCURRING THE ADDITIONAL EXPENSE OR DUPLICATION OF EFFORT REQUIRED TO MOUNT A SEPARATE MAGNETIC SURVEY.
