Used by CBC Toronto (CBL-AM) for radio broadcast transmission.
Function
Used by the CBC in radio broadcast transmitting.
Technical
Example of an air cooled, high power radio transmission tube. Two or more of these would have been used in a typical transmitter installation. Radio station CBL (Toronto) transmitted at 840 KHz on the AM band with a power output of 50 kW. Such tubes are large because the high input voltages require greater spacing between the tube elements to prevent arcing. In addition, to achieve the high power output a larger and hotter filament (or cathode) is needed. Due to the resulting requirement for greater heat dissipation in the other tube elements, the manufacturer must provide for supplementary cooling. In this tube, cooling is accomplished by means of radial fins made of sheet metal.
