GOKSTAD VESSEL REPRESENTS EARLY STAGE IN DEV'T OF NORTHERN EUROPEAN CLINKER BUILT, DOUBLE ENDED VESSEL, WHICH WERE PRECURSORS OF TYPE SEEN IN THOSE WATERS UP UNTIL 20TH C. THIS PARTICULAR SHIP WAS BUILT WITH VERY THICK PLANKS FROM KEEL TO WATERLINE, FROM WHICH SMALLCLEATS WERE LEFT TO ENABLE THE RIBS TO BE TIED TO HULL. THIS AND ITS CLINKER CONSTRUCTION MADE IT QUITE FLEXIBLE YET STRONG. - Area Notes
