Canada: This engine was supplied by McGill University in 1972, specifically by Professor C. Turkstra. Could have been used in their various research departments. Munro Instruments Ltd. Was founded in 1864 by Robert William Munro in England. They provided high quality instruments and systems to measure, monitor and record environmental phenomena. No manufacturer's plate.
Function: Ruling engine used to engrave scales. Produced gratings on various surfaces in order to measure absorption lines at different spectra. Sharp cutting tool (usually a diamond blank) is dragged across a grating blank to cut a groove.
Technical: Blanking carriage moved across gratings due to guidance of a well-made screw. Designed to groove larger spaces because they permitted higher spectroscopic resolution. Temperature and environmental control could be incorporated as well as kinematic isolation.
