MEASURES AND DISPLAYS SIDEREAL TIME, WHICH IS MEASURED IN RELATION TO THE STARS. - Technical
-
SIDEREAL CLOCKS ARE IDENTICAL TO STANDARD ANALOGUE CLOCKS EXCEPT THAT THE GEARING IS MODIFIED TO MAKE THEM RUN APPROX. 4 MINUTES FASTER PER 24-HOUR PERIOD. SIDEREAL TIME IS THE TIME REQUIRED FOR THE EARTH TO ROTATE SO A STAR RETURNS TO THE SAME POINT IN THE SKY (APPROX. 23 HOURS 56 MINUTES 11 SECONDS). ASTRONOMERS USE THE CLOCKS TO LOCATE OBJECTS IN THE NIGHT SKY,& TO KNOW WHERE CELESTIAL OBJECTS ARE DURING DAY. - Area Notes

Details
- Markings
- "SIDEREAL TIME" & "HAINES/ Englewood, N.J." marked in black on clock face. "DO NOT TOUCH/ SECOND HAND" incised on plate fixed to face. Switch/dial mounted on right side of cabinet bears graduated scale.
- Missing
- UNKNOWN: MAY HAVE BEEN MODIFIED WHEN INSTALLED IN CSTM'S HELEN SAWYER HOGG OBSERVATORY. Additional information added by Dave Elliott as of 21/10/2005: This clock is attached to the interior wall of the observatory dome. It covers a cavity within the wall that has four light sockets and a duplex outlet installed. I would hazard a guess that the clockwork mechanism, clock face and perhaps the case cover were at one time mounted directly to the wall. These parts may have been removed and installed in a separate case to make the clock portable for use elsewhwere and also to aid in servicing.
- Finish
- BLACK CABINET; WHITE DIAL FACE; BLACK ROMAN NUMERALS AND HANDS.
