B.S.A was world-famous for its high standards of quality and interchangeability of its parts. The company achieved a great reputation in cycle manufacture. Before manufacturing safety bicycles, BSA laid their stake in the bicycle market by manufacturing the still popular High-wheel bicycle, and later making successful early safety cycles. Racing was prevalent in the 1880s and 1890s and the high wheel bicycle was the popular racing machine of its time. - Function
-
A High-wheeler type bicycle used for transportation, touring, racing, leisure. Manufactured by a company specialized in creating gun parts, making their machinery perfect for bicycle parts. - Technical
-
At this time, all bicycles used ball bearing hubs in a ring to create an axle rotation that was smooth and adjusted for proper play. The BSA penny-farthing is one of the examples of innovation in bicycle manufacturing and mass manufacturing which influenced other operations. Just like Pope’s industrial mass production plant for the Columbia, innovation in bicycle parts was important for the later development of the automobile industry, with many auto machinists using their bicycle mechanic experience (in repair shops and in factories) to adapt numerous cycle innovations to automobiles. Elements like pneumatic tires, wire spokes, steel tubing, gears and differential gears, ball bearings, and chain drives were incredibly fundamental principles adapted to the automotive industry, one of the major players being BSA with their expansion into motorcycles in the 20th century. - Area Notes
