Ferro built outboard motors during the years 1906-1917. The Oglebay Norton Corporation was an ore mining company and operated ships on the Great Lakes. One of Ogle Norton Company’s subsidiaries was the Canadian Ferro Hot Metal Specialties Ltd. (Canada). Oglebay Norton Corporation had assembled its first Great Lakes shipping fleet in 1921, and began to manage four docks along the Great Lakes in the 1930s. In August 2006, Oglebay-Norton’s last three freighters were sold to another Great Lakes. In October 2007, the subsidiary of Belgian-based Carmeuse Group, global producer of lime, agreed to buy Oglebay for $36 a share, or $520 million. The following month, Oglebay shareholders approved a merger with Carmeuse Lime & Stone, Inc. La compagnie Ferro a fabriqué des moteurs hors-bord entre 1906 et 1917. This artifact functions as a small internal combustion one-cylinder engine. Early models were placed inside the boat. If the boat didn’t already have propellers and shafts pre-installed, then they would have been added by the boat owners and connect to the inboard engine. In outboard engines, fuel and air are burned in a closed space, known as the cylinder; this burning process generates hot gasses that try to expand. The only way for the hot gasses to expand is by pushing the piston downward; the piston is connected to a rod, which is linked to the crankshaft. The crankshaft converts the piston’s downward motion into a rotating motion of the shaft. Two-stroke engines are known for their simplicity and affordability. They are lightweight and compact, but oil is mixed with the fuel to lubricate the internal parts and during the combustion process. Some of the fuel mixture from that process escapes with the exhaust, resulting in wasted fuel making them less fuel-efficient and also noisier as well as posing risks in the form of water pollution.
