PORTABLE INSTRUMENTS CONSTRUCTED TO BE MOVED FROM PLACE TO PLACE FOR TESTING PURPOSES. THEY ARE USED MORE OR LESS FOR EXACT MEASUREMENTS & THEREFORE ARE DESIGNED FOR GREAT ACCURACY. ANCESTORS OF MOVING COIL INSTRUMENT WERE THE 'SIPHON RECORDER' DEV'D BY WILLIAMTHOMSON IN 1867 FOR TELEGRAPH INDUSTRY AND THE 'FISHBONE GALVANOMETER' INVENTED IN 1880 BY MARCEL DEPREZ. JACQUES D'ARSONVAL, SUGGESTED FIXING THE 'FISHBONE' IN DEPREZ'S INSTRUMENT, & MAKINGS ITS COIL MOVABLE. MAIN DISADVANTAGE OF THE D'ARSONVAL AMMETER WAS THAT TO WORK PROPERLY, IT REQ'D A VERY LIGHT MOUNTED COIL SO AS TO BE READILY MOVABLE. AS SUCH, IT DIDN'T MEET CRITICAL SUCCESS UNTIL TOWARDS END OF THE 19TH C. - Area Notes
