Manufactured in Canada by the Montreal Shoe Machinery Co. This specific press was used in the Kingston Penitentiary as part of the mandatory work the inmates had to complete. Inmates worked in industrial settings such as shoe shops and forgeries so that they could gain useful, practical skills once they re-entered into society. In the 1851 Kingston Canada Directory of Professional Trades there is a listing for the Penitentiary Boot and Shoe Shop located on Princess Street.
