THE WOOD SOLE PLANE WAS A TRANSITIONAL DESIGN BETWEEN THE BAILEY PLANE AND THE ALL-WOOD PLANE. IT LINGERED ON SINCE MANY CRAFTSMAN PREFERRED THIS PATTERN DUE TO ITS LIGHTER WEIGHT, ESPECIALLY IN THE LARGER SIZES. SARGENT WERE THE PRINCIPAL COMPETITORS TO STANLEY UP UNTIL WWII. - Area Notes
