Gedge's pattern auger bit was developed in England. This was one of the bit styles that influenced the necessity for stronger [iron] braces with improved bit-gripping devices. The other style was the American Jennings bit, a double twist auger bit with a spur on each cutting lip. This permitted the cutting of deeper, cleaner and larger holes than English centre bit was capable of. [Ref. 2, p. 442] - Area Notes
