The 1890s saw these new safeties mass produced to fill demand, and the diamond pattern frame came out on top. Not to mention this sparked numerous social changes and movements. People were resistant to the pneumatic tire, and they made comments on the inelegant appearance of the fat, balloon-like structure. Some dismissed the tire as puncture-prone, however the benefits of their shock-absorbing ability and overall benefits to performance cemented their place on cycles. As the pneumatic tire gained traction, bicycle racing saw a boom. - Function

This artifact is one of the last Ordinary bicycles and it was used as a mode of transportation with energy generated by pedaling. This machine is fitted with pneumatic tires, an emerging standard for all cycles in 1890. - Technical

The main competition between the Ordinary and the Safety bicycles manifested in rider comfort. The bicycling world was given a solution to the problem of road shock and vibration in 1888, with the invention of the pneumatic tire for use on cycles. By 1889, a pneumatic-tired safety was ridden to victory in 4 races by William Hume. The success of the pneumatics in races made the new tires commercially viable. Most of the weaknesses of the tire were systematically solved by 1890, like its ease of puncture, difficulty of detachment and repair, and the lack of a reliable valve. By 1892, almost all manufacturers were using pneumatic tires on their vehicles, including the last of the ordinaries. - Area Notes
