Function: USED TO CUT THE CROZE GROOVE AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE BARREL STAVES NEAR EACH END, IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE HEADS
Technical: THE CROZE IS A FORM OF PLOUGH PLANE, MADE IN A GREAT VARIETY OF FORMS BOTH HOMEMADE & FACTORY MADE. ANARROW CUTTER (CROSE-IRON) IS MOUNTED ON A STEM (POST) WHICH CAN BE MADE TO SHIFT THROUGH A HEAVY SEMI-CIRCULAR FENCE IN WHICH IT IS SECURED IN ANY DESIRED POSITION BY MEANS OF A WEDGE. THUS, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE CROZE GROOVE AND THE STAVE ENDS CAN BE VARIED. THE SIMPLIEST (& PROBABLY THE EARLIEST) CUTTING IRONS ARE SHAPED LIKE SAW TEETH & ARE HELD IN A HOUSING CALLED A BOX OR GUARD. MORE RECENTLY, THE SAW-TOOTH ASSEMBLY WAS IMPROVED BY THE ADDITION OF A HOOKED ROUTER TOOTH AT ONE END (SALAMAN, PP.319-320)
