The Berlin & Racycle manufacturing company made a name for itself as a producer of high-quality bicycles, despite its history in clock making. Sometime in the late 19th Century, Arthur Pequegnat expanded his jewelry business into a bicycle repair shop, and later began to sell bicycles. Tariffs for goods delivered to be sold in Canada were much higher, and it was deemed more profitable to assemble the frames themselves rather than import them. It seems like Pequegnat approached the Miami Cycle and Manufacturing Company of Middletown Ohio, then obtained a franchise to assemble Racycle bicycles in Canada. The Berlin bicycle obtained a reputation for being reliable and solid, and the local police department in Kitchener would go on to use Racycles for over thirty years. The Berlin cycle company was also one of the earliest manufacturing centers for cycling. - Function

-
The Berlin company claimed that their mounts saved one-fourths of a rider’s strength. Since the bearing on the crank hangar was placed outside of the crank attachment, the pressure of the chain sprocket was spread more evenly to both bearings. The frame is also the well-known diamond frame type. By 1890, most bicycle manufacturers had settled on the diamond pattern frame, which was sturdier and helped the rider to have a smoother ride. - Area Notes
