Methanometers were a very important piece of equipment for miners,especially in coal mines as they were used to measure methane gas in the air of a mine. The very first one (W8) was developped around 1950 by Mine Safety ApplianceCompany Ltd. Methanometers powered by an Edison battery cap lamp could be carriedon a miner’s belt along with other tools.
