THIS APPEARS TO REPRESENT AN OLDER STYLE OF THERMOMETER,IN WHICH THE SINGLE TUBE IS MOUNTED ON A CERAMIC SCALE CALIBRATED SO THAT THE THERMOMETER IS HUNG VERTICALLY, RATHER THAN HORIZONTALLY LIKE 870662. A SIMILAR INSTRUMENT IS ILLUSTRATED IN PATTERSON'S 1930 GUIDE TO OBSERVERS, BUT NOT IN MIDDLETON'S 1941 GUIDE. - Area Notes
