AN AMERICAN MADE THERMOMETER WITH A CANADIAN METEOROLOIGCAL SERVICE HOLDER, THE LATTER MARKED DOT METEOROLOGICAL DIVISION, INDICATING IT WAS MADE BETWEEN 1936 AND 1956.

AN INSTRUMENT THAT MEASURES LOW AIR TEMPERATURES BY MEANS OF THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON A COLUMN OF MERCURY-IN-GLASS. THE MERCURY CONTAINS THALLIUM WHICH LOWERS ITS FREEZING POINT FOR USE AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURES.

AMERCURY-THALLIUM THERMOMETER FOR LOW TEMPERATURES, WITH A CANADIAN METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE HOLDER, BOTH OF THE TYPE ILLUSTRATED IN THE 1952 M.S.C. MANUAL (REF. 1). THE CANADIAN SERVICE BEGAN USING MERCURY-THALLIUM IN 1948-1949; IT FREEZES AT -78 DEGREES F. WHILE MERCURY DOES SO AT -38 DEGREES F.
