Canada: Women have been used in bicycle advertisements since the 19th century. At this time, for many, the bicycle represented speed, beauty, and freedom and bicycle advertisements repurposed and reinforced these ideas. The Cycles Gladiator advertisement is an excellent example of this type of work.
Function: A print by lithograph depicting intercourse on a bicycle.
Technical: The last few decades of the 19th century witnessed the rise of cartoons and illustrations that depicted naked bodies and overtly sexualized acts. For example, Fredillo, a French cartoonist and illustrator working in the late 19th century, created The Complete Erotic Fantaisies Parisiennes which a very similar stylistic approach to this artifact.
