This print was done by American illustrator, Edward Windsor Kemble. He is best known for illustrating the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and for his caricatures of African Americans.
Function
A print by Edward Kemble depicting a caricature of African Americans riding bicycles. This comic depicts racist stereotypes that are harmful and offensive. Ingenium preserves such works in order to provide historical context and to enable the study of racism in relation to science, technology, and society.
Technical
Kemble’s representation of black southern culture alternates between presenting them with either “great empathy or with the most outrageous of stereotypes” (ref.1) According to Stephen Railton’s work, at the time, the American readership appreciated these seemingly humanistic approaches to replicating black rural America. Kemble was even considered a “specialist” in such drawings which became the reason for his commission to illustrate Uncle Tom’s Cabin (ref.2). Today, his African American imagery is problematic for its recollection, perpetuation, and promotion of a number of harmful stereotypes (ref.3).
