Function

Solar cells provided main source of power for Alouette 1 spacecraft by converting sunlight into electrical power to charge batteries which provide power for research instruments. These cells were used for intial testing.

Technical

Solar cells are made of semiconductor material formed INP on N junctions, protected by thin layer of glass. When illuminated with intensity of 100mv/cm2 would generate output of 17 volts at 40 Ma For string of 45 cells in series. The different type used on Alouette 2 (N on P junction), was more resistant to radiation
