A VERY EARLY SAMPLE OF THE JACK-IN-THE-BOX TYPE STEM ANTENNA, A VARIATION OF THE STEM TECHNOLOGY IN WHICH A THIN RIBBON OF PRE-STRESSED METAL WAS TWISTED & ROLLED INTO A CASING WITH A LID. IN ORBIT IT WAS RELEASED TO FORM A LONG TUBE. THIS ENABLED THE VERY LONG ANTENNAS REQUIRED BY SPACECRAFT TO BE MADE. - Area Notes
