The Trigull prototype manufacturer, Trident Aircraft Limited, was located at 261 Viscount Way in Richmond British Columbia. The Trigull project was derived from an idea in the mid-1960's to produce a high performance amphibian aircraft. The project originally began in Torrence California, however, a lack of funding stopped production. The project was then adopted by Trident Aircraft Limited of British Columbia, which made arrangements, with Canadian Aircraft Products Limited (CAP) to aid in the fabrication of the Trident prototypes. As Trident Aircraft Limited continued with the production of the Trigull, funding again became a problem. In order to help Trident, the federal government of Canada gave over $10 million, the B.C. provincial government gave $1.7 million and private donors contributed $1.6 million. By 1975, The Trident company was no longer gaining money and relied heavily on government funding for support. In November 1980, Trident Aircraft Limited closed its doors and production of the Trigull ceased. The first prototype of the Trigull was flown for the first time on August 5th 1973. The second prototype, the "C-Gate X" made its first flight with pilot Norman Ronasson on July 2nd 1976. This model was donated to the National Aviation Museum in memory of Mr. Ronasson.
Function
A visual scale representation of a Trigull prototype aircraft originally manufactured by Trident Aircraft Limited.
Technical
The initial concept for the Trigull was to serve as a sport utility aircraft with advanced performance and handling. The Trigull had a 6 person seating capacity with a boat-like fuselage. " The tail unit was a Cantilever-type, of aluminum-stressed skin construction, and a single-swept-back fin and rudder. " The wing span of the prototype was 12.73m with the floats up; 11.73m with the floats down. The wings were a high-wing Cantilever type. The Trigull had an overall lenghth of 8.69m with a height of 3.81m. It also had the capability to land on water, with the use of its boat-like fuselage and retracting hydraulic floats on the wings. The retracting floats allowed for a higher cruise speed. The plane was also able to land on land with the retractable, hydraulic, wheeled-tricycle landing gear.
