It was used by Alfred Gillies for the analysis of rock samples (presumably in Ont.) This type of small, simple, & portable kit was very popular with geologsts & others 1880+

LETCHER, TRURO, CORNWALL/ SOCIETY OF ARTS BLOWPIPE LAMP./ DIRECTIONS./ Light the Wick & then/ direct the flame with the/ Blowpipe on to the grease/ until it is melted, after which/ the heat of the flame is suffi-/ cient to keep the whole liqui-/ fied until all is consumed./ NOTE - The wick should be/ lifted each time after use,/ ready for trimming before/ the next operation."
