WAS BOTH THE NORM AND A NECESSITY FOR MOST, AS THE READY-TO-WEAR CLOTHING INDUSTRY WAS STILL FAIRLY NEW (FOR WOMEN'S & CHILDREN'S GARMENTS), AND EXPENSIVE. PAPER PATTERNS ALSO ALLOWED FOR THE MAKING OF CURRENT FASHIONS IN SMALLER CITIES & TOWNS WHERE SELECTION OF READY-MADE GARMENTS MIGHT BE LIMITED IN SYTLE, COLOUR, SIZE AND/OR PRICE.

Pattern piece- arm hole: pattern piece bears instructions for sizing and placement; most markings appear in both English & French text. Markings include: "The Arm-hole Scale./ Dot this outside row of figures at the numbers correspond-/ ing to the arm-hole measure, for the upper part of the sleeve and/ dot at the inside row of figures to the same number for under/ part."; "The French Alphabet Self-taught/ Sleeve Drafting System./ For Cutting Ladies' and Children's Garments. Copyrighted/ in 1889 and 1890 by J.H. CHOQUETTE, Fall River, Mass./ Three measures are necessary, as indicated in engraving on/ front part of chart, viz: around the arm at shoulder; around/ the wrist, and length of arm from shoulder to wrist./ For length of sleeves, draw a line with inside curved edge/ of chart from number corresponding to length of arm to same/ number at the wrist./ For under part of sleeve- up at double scale indicating arm/ hole, dot at inside number corresponding to arm-size measure;/ also dot at number corresponding to wrist measure; then draw/ a line, using the outside curved edge of chart, from number/ corresponding to length of arm at the bottom of chart up to/ number corresponding to measure of arm hole./ Upper part of sleeve- Dot, at outside of double scale, the/ number corresponding to arm hole measure, do the same at/ number corresponding to wrist measure, and draw a line from/ one dot to the other."
