Canada: PART OF A LARGE COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EQUIPMENT USED BY YOUSUF KARSH, CANADA'S INTERNATIONALLY HONOURED PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER. FROM 1932 TO 1992, MR. KARSH OPERATED FROM HIS PRINCIPLE STUDIO IN OTTAWA, PHOTOGRAPHING HEADS OF STATE, RELIGIOUS LEADERS, AND THOSE PROMINANT IN BUSINESS, THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT. HIS PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS & NEGATIVES, AND PERSONAL PAPERS ARE IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF CANADA.
Function: USED TO EXCLUDE EXTRANEOUS LIGHT FROM ENTERING THE CAMERA LENS, THEREBY REDUCING LENS AND CAMERA FLARE.
Technical: METAL LENS HOOD USED BY KARSH TO KEEP LIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA LENS. IT WAS FOUND AMONG THEITEMS IN HIS BRIEFCASE: SELECTED PIECES OF EQ. WERE SO VALUED BY KARSH THAT HE CARRIED THEM HIMSELF, RATHER THAN HAVE THEM PACKED & SHIPPED WITH HIS OTHER EQUIPMENT.
