METAL TIPS HAD TENDENCY TO CORRODE, BLOCKING OPENING OF GAS JET. IN 1858 WILLIAM SUGG OF ENGLAND BEGAN TO USE NON-METALLIC MATERIAL, STEATITE. - Area Notes
