AMERICAN EDWIN RUUD INVENTED THE 'INSTANEOUS GAS-FIRED WATER HEATER IN 1897; IN 1902 GAS WATER HEATERS WERE MFD IN TORONTO BY THE GURNEY FOUNDRY AND RICHARD BIGLEY. THIS 'RED D' AUTOMATIC GAS HOT WATER HEATER HAS A 21 (IMPERIAL) GALLON CAPACITY. TEMPERATURE COULD BE ADJUSTED BY MEANS OF THE 'UNITROL' DIAL, GAS COULD BE SHUT OFF COMPLETELY IN THE EVENT OF A PILOT FLAME FAILURE. (REF.3 & 4) - Area Notes

Second decal, below, reads "SOLD BY/ THE CONSUMERS' GAS COMPANY/ OF TORONTO/ 10 TORONTO ST. TORONTO CANADA", with logo. Oval copper-coloured plate, below, reads "Red/ D". Temperature control unit's settings labelled, and marked"UNITROL/ ROBERTSHAW/ YOUNGWOOD, PA."; following markings incised on side "PAT.ND./ 1744483/ 1994470/ 2236908/ 2319693/ 2361544/ RE22511/ OTHERS PEND." "MUELLER" incised on drainage tap. "J.R./ WARD" marked on one top pipe cap.
