Canada: EARLY REGENERATIVE RADIO RECEIVER MADE IN MONTREAL PQ BY MARCONI WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. OF CANADA LTD. IN 1923.
Function: TO DETECT AND AMPLIFY RADIO SIGNALS.
Technical: REGENERATIVE RADIO RECEIVERS WERE DEVELOPED IN THE EARLY 1920S, AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CRYSTAL SETS. REGENERATIVE SETS EMPLOYED A VACUUM TUBE TO BOTH DEMODULATE OR DETECT THE RADIO SIGNAL, AND TO PROVIDE AMPLIFICATION. CAREFUL CONTROL OF THE LEVEL OF AMPLIFICATION WAS NECESSARY TO PREVENT OSCILLATION OF THE VACUUM TUBE. BUT THE RESULT WAS THAT POWER OUTPUT WAS INSUFFICIENT TO DRIVE A LOUDSPEAKER. (REF. 1)

Silver metal fixed to inside of cabinet door incised "THE MARCONI/ WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO./ OF CANADA LIMITED/ MONTREAL/ PATENTED 1918-1923/ TYPE NO. M1 SERIAL NO. 816". "131" stamped into lower rear inside edge of cabinet. "MARCONI/ CANADA" incised in receptacle for vacuum tube. Internal component located between coupler & tuning coil marked "HOLD-TITE/ CARTER RADIO CO./ CHICAGO". Vacuum tube marked"CANADIAN/ WESTINGHOUSE/ 201 A" on tube top.

Finish: DARK WOOD CABINET. DARK BROWN SYNTHETIC PANEL BEARS GOLDTONE MARKINGS AND BRIGHT BRASS-COLOUR INDICATORS, HARDWARE, ETC. BLACK MOULDED SYNTHETIC KNOBS, TERMINAL FITTINGS, ETC. SINGLE VACUUM TUBE INSIDE CABINET HAS SILVER CLAD GLASS ENVELOPE. COUPLER HAS GREEN COVERING ON WIRES.
