SUFACE GAUGE OR SCRIBING BLOCK, USED TO INCISE SIMPLE MARKINGS ON METAL. THE SURFACE OF THE METAL TO BE MARKED IS FIRST COATED WITH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOLUTIONS, OR WITH CHALK: IT SUPPORTED AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE SURFACE GAUGE.
