Period: This is the instrument pictured and described in 1933 American Journal of Obst. & Gynac. It is the pre-production model.
Canada: Part of a large collection of medical artifacts, archival material & trade literature transferred to CSTM in 2002 from the former History of Medicine Museum, Toronto, ON. This instrument was developed in the Dept. of Obstetrics, University of Toronto and in the Obstetrical Div., Service of Prof. W.B. Hendry, Toronto General Hospital [TGH]. [Ref. 5]
Function: To assist in the delivery of a baby by turning and/or pulling the child while still in the birth canal.
Technical: Obstetrical forceps have blade and shank joined by a split universal joint.Traction bar [.3] joins shanks together.

Markings: None evident, save UHN catalogue no. "984.5.4 b" printed by hand in black ink on instrument.
Missing: This blade is complete in itself. Rods used to lock universal joints on assembled forceps instrument are missing.
