The sonar transducer is a Canadian technology that originated in the 1980s at the Atlantic division of DRDC (Defence Research and Development Canada) and continues to influence several R&D programs for the Canadian Navy today. The sonar transducers were patented in 1991. Barrel-stave transducers have played a role in at least 26 DRDC Atlantic sea trials and nine joint trials with the Canadian Navy and Dalhousie University in Halifax. These compact devices were incorporated into low frequency active towed arrays and submarine communication buoys, and have also been deployed under the ice in Canada’s north to support the development of rapidly deployable surveillance systems. Function

This cable reel is used to lower the transducer into the water and to retrieve it when an experiment is complete. It likely connects to a control box and a transducer. The cable reel is thereby likely responsible for facilitating the commands from a control box to the transducer in order for it to perform its functions. Finish

A cable reel that has a metal frame with three feet that extend around its circular body. The body is comprised of two thin circular sheets of metal (one on either side) that are held together with a metal rod that connects both of them down the middle. Each foot is covered with a black synthetic sleeve. The top foot has a longer sleeve indicating it is meant to be a handle. A hole is visible in the front circular sheet along its body that allows a wound black synthetic cable to pass through it. The cable splits in two and has a metal adapter piece on one end as well as a pair of brown synthetic cables held together with a black synthetic sleeve on the other. Both the cable and the adapter have markings. The cable itself is also kept in what could possibly by a nylon sock. A black and yellow sticker with lettering of the same colour is visible on the side of one of the circular sheets. Un dévidoir de câble qui a un corps fait en métal et trois pieds qui ressort autour de son corps circulaire. Le corps est formé avec deux feuilles en métal rond (un de chaque côté) qui sont tenus ensemble par une tige qui les connectes dans le milieu. Chaque pied de l'objet est recouvert avec une manche synthétique. Un des pieds a une manche synthétique plus longue que les autres qui indiquent qu'il pouvait possiblement être une poignée. Un trou est visible sur le devant dune des feuilles circulaires pour qu'un câble puisse ressortir ou être enroulé. Le câble se sépare en deux morceaux. Un câble a une pièce adaptatrice en métal en forme de fiche. La pièce adaptatrice à des marques du fabricateur autour de la pièce. L'autre câble devient une paire de câbles synthétique de couleur brune qui sont tenus ensemble avec l'aide d’une manche synthétique de couleur noire. Le câble principal est tenu dans un bas synthétique qui est possiblement du nylon. Un autocollant noir et jaune avec du lettrage de la même couleur est visible sur le côté circulaire d'une des feuilles en métal.
