The painting was originally commissioned for the store by the manager who was a family member of the owning firm, Girard-Perregaux. The origins of the Girard-Perregaux store in Montreal have not been found. The tough market conditions in the 1970s and 1980s forced it to close ca. 1985-1990. The painting is an example of air bush art which originated in 1893 not long after the appearance of the air compressor. The subject matter, with its emphasis on modern technology, created a link to the merchandise of the store. The trains has strong streamline features and the plane resembles the Northrop YB-49 from the late 1940s. (From the acquisition worksheet, see Ref. 1) - Area Notes
