Ce moteur avait importance technologique dans le contexte de la pêche commerciale au Canada entre 1970 et 1990 dans les Maritimes et à titre de modèle représentatif du moteur de petite embarcation de travail le plus représentatif au Canada pour cette même période. Ce moteur est aussi intéressant pour l’aspect social de sa provenance. Il a en effet été utilisé sur un bateau sur lequel un couple pratique ensemble la pêche commerciale. [Ref. 1] - Function

Ce moteur de la série 71 existait depuis la fin des années 1930 sous le nom de Gray Marine, la firme qui ‘navalisait’ les moteurs GM. Par la suite, GM fit elle-même ce processus et les moteurs devinrent connus sous le nom de GM Detroit Diesel vers 1958. Le moteur de la série 71 était réputé pour sa puissance à faible vitesse, sa fiabilité, sa longévité et la facilité d’obtenir des pièces car Detroit Diesel était alors le plus grand manufacturier de moteurs diesel au monde. Cette firme portait en 1969, tout juste avant notre période à l’étude, le nom de Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd. En 1970, Detroit Diesel fut consolidée avec une autre division de GM, Allison. Plus tard, en 1988, Penske devint propriétaire de 60% des parts de la compagnie et en 2000, DaimlerChrysler en fit l’acquisition. La production de la série 6-71 fut abandonnée vers la fin des années 1990 parce qu’il ne rencontrait plus les nouvelles normes environnementales. [Ref.1] - Area Notes

- Markings on motor include [but are not limited to]: "DETROIT DIESEL" cast in raised print on both side of engine block top, framing the "Built-In Parts Book". "DETROIT DIESEL/ CORPORATION/U.S.A./ [logo]/ L 18160" also printed on both "Built-In Parts Book" panels. "DETROIT DIESEL ENGINE 0006A459501 WAS MANUFACTURED TO/ PRODUCE 0192 BRAKE HORSEPOWER AT 1800 RPM. MODIFICATIONS/ TO THE ENGINE THAT AFFECT THESE SPECIFICATIONS MAY RESULT/ IN ENGINE DAMAGE OR INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION OR POSSIBLE/ VIOLATION OF FEDERAL OR STATE EMISSION REGULATIONS. THE/ ENGINES PRODUCT OR EMISSIONS WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER ENGINE/ DAMAGE WHICH WAS CAUSED BY CHANGES TO THE SPECIFIED/ ENGINE HORSEPOWER RATING OR RPM./ NOTICE/ AVOID/ ENGINE/ DAMAGE". "6A459501/ 1064-7002" stamped into plate fastened to motor casing. [NB: Manual indicates these are Serial Number and Model designations. See Ref. 2, p. 8] Numerous other markings, including part nos., cast/stamped into engine components.
