William Frederick Hosford was a man who owned a dairy farm in Nova Scotia up until the 1960's. His family sign was an advertisement and promotional medium for his business. It speaks to the effort to support breed improvement amongst farmers. Various breeds came to be associated with particular regions of Canada and the Guernsey is no exception. They were introduced to Nova Scotia in the 1870's and gradually gained popularity amongst other maritime provinces such as New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. En Nouvelle-Écosse il existait une ferme laitière qui appartenait à William Frederick Hosford qui a fermé pendant les années 1960s. L'enseigne de sa famille fonctionnais comme une annonce pour générer de la publicité et une promotion pour son entreprise. L'enseigne représente l'effort pour améliorer les caractéristiques génétiques des animaux par les agriculteurs. Nombreux animaux sont devenus associer à des régions en particulier avec le Canada et les vaches Guernsey en faisait partie. Les vaches Guernsey ont été introduit en Nouvelle-Écosse dans les années 1870s et ils ont tranquillement gagné en popularité dans les provinces maritimes comme le Nouveau Brunswick et L'Île du Prince Edward.

Technical

These signs were usually attached to mail box posts or other posts at the end of the farm's laneway. The hardware on this sign suggests it would have hung from a cross-arm post. These signs were once made by breeders' associations and given to farmers who were members of their fraternity but today that is no longer the case despite farmers still employing these kinds of signs. Les enseigne de ce genre était normalement attaché à des poteaux de boites à mail ou d'autre poteau proche de la fin de l'allée de l'agriculteur. L'enseigne était suspendu d'un poteau en construction de croix. Ces enseignes ont été construit par des associations d'éleveurs pour leurs membres mais aujourd'hui ce n'est pas le cas malgré que les enseignes de ce style sont quand même employés par des agriculteurs.

A wooden sign with two black painted metal fasteners on its top. Animals on the sign are painted brown, black, and white. The sign's title is stenciled in black lettering with a white trim. A smaller metal sign hangs below the main sign and is also attached with metal fasteners. Une enseigne en bois avec deux crochets en métal peinturer noir. L'enseigne à des animaux peinturé en brun, noir et blanc. Le titre sur l'enseigne et écrit au pochoir en noir et a une ligne de niveau en blanc. Un plus petit enseigne est connecté à l'enseigne principal avec d'autres pièces de fixation en métal aussi.
