A flight plan is a document filed by a Pilot or Flight Dispatcher with civil or military aviation authorities prior to departure. It generally includes basic information such as departure and arrival points, estimated time en route, alternate airports in case of bad weather, type of flight, pilot's name and number of people on board, etc. Flight plans are used by air traffic control to initiate tracking and routing services. They also provide a way of alerting rescuers if the flight is overdue and provide needed information for search and rescue operations. - Technical
