Taken from curatorial worksheet: "Used in Fernande Rochon’s Crystallography laboratory at the Chemistry Department at UQAM. These items are excellent examples of technologies used in Canadian chemistry that pre-date the use of computer graphics for visualizing chemical models and crystals."
Function
Used to view chemical structures or maps in 3D.
Technical
Taken from curatorial worksheet: "Stereo viewer and drawings: Instrument to view things in 3D. It was used in the Geology department to look at 3D maps (in stereo) to visualize the mountains, etc. In chemistry, it was used it to visualize 3D crystal structures, especially packing in crystals. Fernande Rochon’s lab had a program (ORTEP) which could draw the molecules in stereo. Two different drawings were drawn and each had a slightly different viewing angle adapted for each eye of the viewer. These two drawings were placed under this instrument which has two mirrors on the sides. By looking in the two lenses, one could see the drawing in 3D."
