The Superang was a Canadian toy invented and patented by Canadian James Liston, based on the boomerang. Boomerangs are hand-held aerodynamic throwing sticks that have been used around the world for thousands of years, primarily for hunting and recreation, and are most often associated with Indigenous peoples from Australia. Liston's SUPERANG was patented in 1966 and updated the traditional wooden boomerang design by being constructed of soft polyethylene and including an inner wire frame. This design allows users to gently bend and adjust the Superang to best suit their dominant hand, allowing both left- and right-handed users to throw the Superang for straight and return flight. Instructions are provided on the packaging explaining how to bend the Superang to adjust it for left- and right-handed users. The Superang was produced in multiple bright colours and the packaging features a young child, suggesting that this toy was marketed for a young audience. Liston was inspired to invent the Superang as he was left-handed and had not found a left-handed boomerang. Indicated on the small price label on the upper right corner, this toy boomerang was purchased at a Zeller's store.
Function
An airfoil shaped toy boomerang that can act as both a returning boomerang and as a non-returning boomerang. As a returning boomerang, the user can throw it in a circle or figure 8 pattern, and if thrown correctly it will return to the user. As a non-returning boomerang, it can be thrown at a target.
Technical
The Superang took the traditional boomerang shape and function and updated it to allow both left- and right-handed users to throw it for straight and return flight. The internal wire frame and soft polyethylene material is technically significant as it allows users to bend and adjust the Superang for straight and return flight using their left or right hand. This design innovation made this recreational toy accesible to a wider audience.
