Function: This lamp was used on the front of a locomotive indicating if the train was a regular scheduled train or an extra (not scheduled). (From "Andrew Merrilees Donation - Appendix A", Ref. 2)
Technical: The lenses are clear, but a outside lever will rotate inside a green visor over the light bulb which will change the illuminated color. This is an early example of an all-electric cassifiaction lamp used on steam and diesel-electric locomotives. (see Ref. 2)
