This plaque was intended for the opening of the TCA Engineering and Maintenace Base at Dorval Airport in Montreal, which was supposed to be opened by Prime Minister Diefenbaker on December 15, 1960. When the base was opened by Minister of Transport Leon Balcer rather than Diefenbaker, the plaque was put in storage. It was given to J.T. Bain, who oversaw the design and construction of the base, upon his retirement a few years later. The plaque had been modified to read “Engineering and Maintenance Base not opened by John G. Diefenbaker”. The Base was built because the existing overhaul and maintenance unit in Winnipeg was neither big nor complex enough for the fleet of jets TCA ordered in the 1950s. TCA decided to build the new maintenance base in Montreal, for a number of reasons, including the city’s large population, the amount of air traffic that travelled through the city, and future airport developments. The decision may also have been affected by company president Gordon McGreror’s love of Montreal, his hometown. (The airline’s operational headquarters was moved from Winnipeg to Montreal in 1949.) This decision caused much controversy because people feared it would have a negative economic effect on Winnipeg. James Tocher (Jim) Bain is a member of Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame. Born in Scotland, he “moved to Canada in 1938, taking a position with Trans-Canada Airlines maintenance and overhaul in Winnipeg, Manitoba and eventually rose to the position of Director of Maintenance and Engineering of Air Canada. He is widely known as the man responsible for the specifications and developement of the Canadair North Star. He over saw the design and construction of the Air Canada jet fleet base (the Engineering and Maintenance Base) at Dorval, Quebec.” The “not” added to the plaque may be representative of a dislike of Diefenbaker at TCA that was due to more than his not attending the opening of the base. TCA often clashed with the Conservative government and Diefenbaker himself while he was in power. Technical
This plaque is representative of the technological shift from piston powered airliners to jetliners as the new maintenance building was required because TCA had ordered a fleet of jets (Douglas DC-8ss and Vickers Vanguards). The move from Winnipeg to Montreal also reflects this technological change. Winnipeg had been an important base when airlines used slow piston aircraft that flew intermediate stops, but was no longer crucial after the introduction of fast, long distance jets. Cette plaque est représentative d'un changement technologique entre les avions à pistons aux avions de lignes. Heavy plaque made from steel and brass. The perimeter of the frame is made from a grey steel and the plaque itself is made of brass and is brass colored. The "NOT" added after the fact is made from a silver metal with black text. On the back of the plaque, there are six grey screws attaching the plaque and the frame. The text writing is embossed. Plaque lourde fait d'acier et laiton. Le périmètre du cadre est fait en acier gris et la plaque elle-même est faite de laiton et elle a une couleur de laiton. Le mot "NOT" rajouté plus tard est fabriqué en métal argenté avec de l'écriture noire. Sur le derrière de la plaque, on retrouve six vis qui attachent la plaque et le cadre. Le texte sur la plaque est en relief.
Decoration
On the plaque, the TCA logo is front and center: an airplane is at the forefront and there is a maple leaf behind the plane. The letters T.C.A are written above the airplane and maple leaf. Sur la plaque, le logo TCA est en prééminence: un avion est au devant et on retrouve une feuille d'érable derrière l'avion. Les lettres "T.C.A" sont écrites au-dessus l'avion et la feuille d'érable.
