The daughter of the owner of this camera described his interest in photography as a “a semi-hobby.” For example, he was one of the first people in their neighbourhood (Eganville, Ontario) to have a movie camera which was used to entertain during family gatherings (usually after dinner). The Instamatic was immensely successful, introducing a generation to low-cost photography and spawning numerous imitators. During its heyday, the range was so ubiquitous that the Instamatic name is frequently used to refer to any inexpensive point-and-shoot camera. The line of KODAK INSTAMATIC Cameras was introduced, featuring easy-to-use cartridge-loading film, which eventually brought amateur photography to new heights of popularity. More than 50 million INSTAMATIC Cameras were produced by 1970. Kodak Camera was founded by Eastman Kodak in 1899 in a Toronto shop where employees cut sheet film and fitted lenses on cameras to support the growing potential for a photographic market in Canada. As Canadian interest in photography grew, the company expanded across the country throughout the 20th century to produce in all aspects of photography including still and movie cameras, film, x-ray, photocopy paper, and photographic chemicals under many popular names including Brownie, Kodacolor, Carousel, and Supermatic.
Function
To record still images on photographic film.
Technical
The Instamatic was part of a series of inexpensive, easy-to-load cameras made by Kodak beginning in 1963. It incorporated type 126 film cartridge system, which was Kodak’s answer to consumer complaints about the complications involved with loading and unloading roll film cameras. This film cartridge did not have to be attached to a take-up spool, as it could simply be dropped into the camera. Users, from that point, had to close the back of the camera, wind, and shoot. The Instamatic 154 was a spring motor model, with a flashcube socket on top.
