Taken from curatorial worksheet "Developed by Research In Motion, a Canadian wireless equipment manufacturer and telecommunication service provider. The Pearl series began with 8100 which was released in 2006 and was discontinued after the release of the 9100 in 2010. The BlackBerry Pearl was aimed towards both business users and consumer. The Pearl 8130 uses a modified QWERTY keyboard on a 4-row, 5-column keypad. Its design also incorporates a translucent trackball, which replaced the scroll wheel, and facilitates horizontal and vertical scrolling. The device operates on BlackBerry OS. This device was donated to the museum by Julie Miller, a retired elementary school principal from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. The Pearl was her first cellular telephone, which she used primarily for texting purposes. In January 2013, Mrs. Miller replaced this phone with the Apple iPhone 5.".
Function
Receivers for data & radiotelephone transceiver that are inserted into the ears.
Technical
Taken from curatorial worksheet "The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 was part of a series of smartphones developed by Research In Motion that had a camera and a media player. The BlackBerry 8130 includes EV-DO high speed CDMA data capabilities and uses the Antioch chip from Cypress Semiconductor which enables direct connection between peripherals, creating ultra-fast transfers. (ref.2) This upgrade from the 8100 provides faster USB side-loading and connection to the micro-SDHC card. This speed significantly surpassed that of the earlier iPhone and Motorola RAZR.".
