Designed by Ampex engineer Jack Wernli and first introduced in 1954, the 601 is a high-quality, portable tape recorder-player. At “only 27 pounds” it was considered lightweight at the time (Leslie and Snyder, 2010, p. 7). It pairs with the Ampex 620 amplified loudspeaker, as part of a portable “suitcase” unit (see 2013.0667). - Area Notes

- As indicated by the blue plate, the meter glass is missing.
- Finish
- Recorder inserted in a synthetic orange casing. The edges of the casing has a brown / orange artificial leather finish with yellow stitching. The casing has numerous orange rubber pegs to set the player. The front of the player has a dark grey metal grilling and a brown synthetic interface. The interface of the player has metal and synthetic detailling, including black knobs, silver switches and black rotation knobs.
