Designed by Ampex engineer Jack Wernli and first introduced in 1954, the 601 is a high-quality, portable tape recorder-player. At “only 27 pounds” it was considered lightweight at the time (Leslie and Snyder, 2010, p. 7). It pairs with the Ampex 620 amplified loudspeaker, as part of a portable “suitcase” unit (see 2013.0667). - Area Notes
