Period
Used between the 1950s and the 2000s.
Canada
This artifact was used by Imperial Oil geophysicists to conduct research on the field.
Function
This altimeter was used to measure altitude.
Technical
This artifact was used to quickly measure the altitude of a terrain with graduations reaching hundreds of feet, where a 3-15 feet error range is acceptable. This altimeter was only used to provide ground control points for small and medium-scale photogrammetric mapping and reconnaissance surveys. The movement created by the expansion or the contraction of the atmospheric pressure is read within the instrument through a cogwheel and lever transmission, which is then transferred to an index. This allowed the user to read the elevation directly on a circular scale. Readings can be taken from up to 75 000 feet in altitude and from two different scales, the inner one featuring graduations from 500 to 3900 and the exterior one from 3900 to 7500. Wallace & Tiernan altimeters are shock-resistant through the incorporation of jeweled bearings and feature individual graduations on the scale.
