In an email from Jan Davies, the donor noted: “I used both items in the Department of Anesthesia at the Foothills Medical Centre. I would have used the nerve stimulator between 1984 and about 1986-7. By that time, nerve stimulators were generally being used with much more regularity and the Department had purchased nerve stimulators that could be clamped to an IV pole, with one for each room.” - Function
-
Used to power a nerve stimulator meant to assess the degree of muscle relaxation after a patient had been given a drug like curare. - Technical
-
In 1987, The Guidelines to the Practice of Anaesthesia as Recommended by the Canadian Anaesthetists' Society stated that a Peripheral Nerve Stimulator was a "basic" piece of equipment that was not a "requirement" (i.e., in each Operating Room) but should be "immediately available" (i.e., from a central supply area in the OR Suite).” By assessing the depth of neuromuscular blockade, peripheral nerve stimulation can ensure proper medication dosing and thus decrease the incidence of side effects. - Area Notes
