The coin commemorates opening of Holt-McDermott Mine on Aug. 8, 1988. The exploration at the site of the mine was first established by P.A. McDermott in 1922, when he discovered gold in the northwestern Holloway Township. The operations were limited and involved some trenching and drilling to evaluate prospects. In the late 1940s and early 1950s Sylvanite Gold drilled additional 11 holes along 76 meters of strike. In 1985 the first exploration shaft was developed by Barrick, which made a decision to exploit the mine in the late 1986. The operation began in Aug. 1988. The mine was purchased by Newmont in 2004 and by SAS in 2006. - Area Notes
