This Master Breeder plaque—one of five master breed plaques given in 1956—was awarded to Hugh W. Ormiston of Brooklin, Ontario who received it at the Holstein society’s annual meeting in February 1957. Ormiston began dairy farming after the Second World War. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in July 1940 and served with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division until 1946. Returning to the family farm and working alongside his father Fred and brother Roy, Hugh Ormiston established a reputation for breeding prize-winning cows. Cette plaque, une des cinq donnés en 1956, a été récompensé à Hugh W. Ormiston de Brooklin en Ontario, l'a reçu à la rencontre annuel Holstein en février 1957. Ormiston a commencé l'élevage laitier après la seconde guerre mondiale. Il a été inscrit dans l'armée canadienne en juillet 1940 et a servi dans la 5e division canadienne jusqu'en 1946. Dès son retour à la ferme de famille pour travailler avec son père Fred et son frère Roy, Hugh a établi une réputation d'élever des vaches de haut-calibre.

Function

The Master Breeder Award is presented by the Holstein Association of Canada. The award was inaugurated in 1929 and given to Holstein breeders to recognize excellence in breeding and herd management. Excellence is measured in terms of high milk production, conformation, reproduction, health, and longevity. Le prix " Master Breeder " est présenté par l'Association Holstein du Canada. Le prix a été inauguré en 1929 et donné aux éleveurs pour reconnaitre leur excellence dans l'élevage et la gestion du troupeau. L'excellence est determinée en terme de production laitière, conformation, reproduction, santé et longévité.

Technical

The plaque itself has no technical significance, but reflects the importance of breeding associations in breed development and registration in Canada. The collection includes another Master Breeder shield (2009.0264) which was awarded in 1947 to the Central Experimental Farm. G.W. Muir was the Dominion Animal Husbandman and received the plaque. C.D. Mackenzie was in charge of the dairy herd. La plaque en tant que tel n'a pas de pertinence technique, mais reflète l'importance des associations d'élevages au Canada.
