- Period
- This number plate was used while the locomotive was active during 1956 until 1982.

-
The number plate was used to identify the RS-10 model locomotive purchased by Canadian Pacific in 1956. The RS-10 locomotives were diesel-electric switcher locomotives manufactured by Montreal Locomotive Works between 1954 and 1957. The number plate was originally mounted on CP 8558 which was acquired by Via Rail in 1978 and the locomotive was renumbered VIA 8558. The now-VIA 8558 was retired from service in 1982-83. - Function
-
This plate is used to identify a particular locomotive in a company's roster. - Technical
-
Switcher locomotives were used to move railcars into, around, and out rail yards. This type of locomotive was generally a hood unit (versus Cab unit) which allowed the operator to see the front of the locomotive whether it was operating in forward or reverse. - Area Notes
